The Bella Project – Mobile App Development

Portfolio Description

Mobile Application

As a charitable donation, Spot Solutions is developing a mobile application that assists Cystic Fibrosis patients, who must undergo a demanding daily routine of physical therapy designed to keep the lungs free of congestion and infection. This application provides both a diverting experience during the otherwise grueling daily physical therapy, but also documents the treatment regime for later review by the patient’s medical practitioner. Background and History

Cystic Fibrosis Canada is a national not-for-profit corporation and one of the world’s top three charitable organizations committed to improving and lengthening the lives of people living with cystic fibrosis. In their 60-year history, they have advanced cystic fibrosis research and care that has more than doubled life expectancy for Canadians living with cystic fibrosis.

The Problem

Patients must undergo a demanding daily routine of physical therapy designed to keep their lungs free of congestion and infection. Cystic Fibrosis Canada was looking for a way to document the treatment regime while providing a diverting experience.

Their challenges were:

  • Needed an app that was simple and fun for children to use.
  • Needed secure cloud storage for their data
  • The app needed to be mobile and work on multiple device types

Our Solution

Spot Solutions developed a tablet and phone-based mobile application that “gamifies” Cystic Fibrosis therapy for patients. This application provides both a diverting experience during the otherwise grueling daily physical therapy, but also documents the treatment regime for later review by the patient’s medical practitioner. The system includes the following features:

  • Pressure transducer to monitor breathing.
  • Bluetooth transmission for wireless convenience.
  • Native mobile application for tablets and smartphones to receive and process the data from the therapy.
  • Interface to the Unity 3D game development framework so that tens of thousands of game developers can apply their skills to this project, and
  • Secure web service interface for cloud storage of the data.

The Impact

Cystic Fibrosis now has a gamified app that they can share with their patients.

Now Cystic Fibrosis patients can:

  • Have fun while documenting their physical therapy.
  • Provide good data to their medical practitioner.
  • Experience better treatment.
