New to SharePoint On-Premise?

SharePoint On-Premise refers to a group of SharePoint applications starting with SharePoint 2010. This involves purchasing the liscensing for SharePoint, but instead of having a third party host it on the cloud for you, you install it on your own servers. It is up to your internal IT company to maintain and update these server farms, but you have complete control of it.

Many companies are moving towards cloud-based solutions, though plenty are maintining a hybrid of On-Premise and Online. Some organizations have restrictions as to where their data can be kept, especially sensitive data requiring at least a small server farm. Some will maintain On-Premise servers because they are easier to integrate legacy systems with.

What are the benefits of SharePoint On-Premise?

Security

Because your data is on-premise and being maintained by an internal IT department, you have complete control over the security over your data. It is up to you to decide how many security measures to put in place, whereas the cloud-based systems have preset security systems. This allows for safer storage of your confidential and otherwise sensitive data.

Complete Customization

On-Premise solutions allow for complete customization of your SharePoint environment. You complete the installation yourself, meaning you have access to more tools. SharePoint online is managed by Microsoft, so it limits structural customization, but with SharePoint On-Premise, you have more flexibility for customization for functionality, layout, look, and feel.

Control of the Environment

Having control of your SharePoint environment means that you decide what you need or want, rather than a vendor. This includes tools, applications, and security measures. Furthermore, you get to decide what updates you want to go through with at what time. Your SharePoint environment is in your hands, and you get to make the decisions that 3rd parties would otherwise.

Is SharePoint On-Premise right for you?

SharePoint On-Premise can be very beneficial when used correctly, but it isn’t for everyone. After the up-front installation costs, there are still the costs associated with maintaining the server farm, as well as requiring the room to host one. These are just some types of businesses that would benefit an On-Premise SharePoint solution include:

Small businesses who only intend to host small farms. When you require less data storage, the accumulative costs of maintenance decrease as well. This, along with the upfront cost of On-Premise solutions being cheaper than the monthly cloud hosting fees, may make this option preferable.

Large enterprises. These will often have the budget to absorb the hidden costs associated with On-Premise, and this solution would act as a capital investment. Having an IT department dedicated to maintaining the servers and updating them may be the most beneficial option.

Organizations with specific data security restrictions. Organizations involved in finances, health care, and so on may need to invest in an On-Premise solution. While the cloud is secure, it will never be as secure as what measures you can build for yourself with your own server farm. Even having a small On-Premise server farm for confidential data, and a SharePoint Online solution for everything else might be the best option.
